Alberta Atwater

Mrs. Alberta Atwater, 93, was called home to rest on Sunday, October 6, 2019. She was born January 23, 1926 to the late Willy Beatrice Tucker and Will Moore in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Alberta grew up on the Northside of Pittsburgh and was educated in the Pittsburgh Public School System. She was married to Charles D. Atwater on April 23, 1943, and to this union were born three children: Charles (Chuck) Atwater Jr., James (Bernie) Atwater, and Cynthia (Cindy) Denise Atwater. Alberta was a devoted wife, mother and friend to all that knew her. She was a member of Bidwell Presbyterian Church, worked for many years cleaning homes and eventually was employed by the University of Pittsburgh Dental School where she retired. Because of her sacrifices and hard work, Alberta enabled all three of her children to attend and achieve college degrees. 24 Sylvania Avenue, the home she cared for was beloved by all who crossed her thresh-hold. She had the patience of a saint with her husband and his friends that frequented the home to discuss world events and her two precocious sons that took after their dad and exercised the previously established open door policy with friends of their own. Alberta provided loving, compassionate care to family members in their later years of life. She entertained guests, relatives, and friends with grace and kindness; all were welcome at Albertas table. She had the amazing ability to make a meal with what was at hand that rivaled the finest restaurant in town. However, on one occasion, even she had her hospitality skills challenged. Albertas oldest son asked if she would host the Ohio University Swim Team after a swim meet against the University of Pittsburgh. Without hesitation, Alberta, agreed and with the help of neighbors and relatives fed thirty hungry swimmers, coaches and a bus driver in that home that was hers. Mrs. Atwater was a loving wife and is survived by her brother, Willet Moore of Norfolk, Virginia; two sons, Bernie of Dallas, Texas and Chuck (Jodee) of Detroit, Michigan; one daughter, Cindy of Springfield, Ohio; seven grandchildren, Jeffrey, Linsey, Ashley, Courtney, Omari, Saeed, and Armand; six great-grandchildren, Allahnah, August, Jonathan, Jacob, Camilla, and Omari, Jr.; and a host of other relatives and friends. OHIO: Memorial Service will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 10, 2019 in the Covenant United Methodist Church, 529 W State St, Springfield, Ohio 45506. PENNSYLVANIA: Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, October 11, 2019 in the Bidwell Presbyterian Church, 1025 Liverpool St, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15233. Interment will be held in Mount Lebanon Cemetery in 509 Washington Rd, Pittsburgh, PA 15228. Arrangements entrusted to the care of KINLEY Funeral Home.
