Carvey Castleberry, 65, of Springfield, Ohio, surrounded by his loved ones, was called to his heavenly home to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 18, 2023 at Northwood Skilled Nursing Home, Springfield, Ohio. He was born in Springfield on June 14, 1957 to the late Claude N. Castleberry, Sr. and Carleen (Benton) Castleberry.
He accepted the Lord and was baptized at an early age under the leadership of his late grandfather, Rev. Herbert Benton, at Greater First Baptist Church where he was on the Usher Board. Carvey loved to sing, but couldn’t hold a note, but, he always tried. He re-dedicated his life to the Lord at a later age under the leadership of Rev. Mark Mitchell, at Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church. Carvey loved the Lord and kept his faith in God even though he had fallen, he got back up and surrendered his life to Christ.
Carvey went to Clark Jr. High School, where he was a star quarterback. He also attended North High School. Carvey loved the game of football in which he watched every sport on television with his dad, and not just one TV, but 2 or 3 TVs were going on at the same time with 2 or 3 different sports playing on different channels. He loved the card game, bid whist, which he knew he was good at, and loved talking smack with his fellow players.
He loved being around his family and making everyone laugh. Carvey loved to skate, which he was good at as well. He would always sit in front of the house on the sidewalk in his chair waving and hollering at anyone that would wave and holler back. Carvey loved people and knew all the happenings that would go on in Springfield, we would say, just ask Carvey, he knows.
Carvey loved food, he would eat until he couldn’t eat anymore. He was a loving and giving man. If he had it, he didn’t mind giving it to you. Carvey also loved birthdays, especially his own. He would call his family and wish them a happy birthday on their special day, but, couldn’t wait until his birthday—he was always waiting for his gifts from his family. Carvey was also known for his nicknames: Lulu, CC, and Bonks. Carvey was loved. Uncle Carvey was just Uncle Carvey, as his nieces and nephews would say.
Carvey leaves to cherish his memory: his mother, Deaconess Carleen Castleberry; one brother, Claude N. (Lydia/Cookie) Castleberry; two sisters, Carla (Donald) Taylor, Cencis (Douglas) Castleberry-Perry; half-sister, Vicky Colvin; godbrother, Kevin Morris; his uncles and aunts, Wade (Sandra/Aunt Dee Dee) Castleberry, Jr., Pauline (Roosevelt) Stembridge, Marietta, Georgia and Bernice Benton, and Unita Lawrence; nieces, nephews, and cousins. He especially leaves to mourn, the love of his life, Debbie Mapp and her family; his special niece, Meshaun, who would cut his hair, would regularly visit and feed him while in the nursing home, along with his sister Carla and Debbie; and his friends, Jason Exon, Lester Embry, and Tony Williams.
He was preceded in death by his father, Deacon Claude N. Castleberry, Sr.; maternal grandparents, Rev. Herbert and Anna Benton; paternal grandparents, Deacon Wade and Essie Mae Castleberry; his aunt and uncle, Wauline Smith, and Thomas Benton.
Carvey will truly be missed by all who knew him. We love you Carvey Castleberry and will always be in our hearts and thoughts.
