Edward J. Deacon Mitchell

July 9, 1929 — February 9, 2019

Deacon Edward J. Mitchell, 89, passed away Saturday, February 9, 2019. He was born July 9, 1929 to Gracie and William David Mitchell in Jarratt, Virginia. He was the youngest of nine children. His family moved to Richmond, Virginia where he grew up and later graduated from Maggie L. Walker High School. After high school Edward enlisted in the United States Army, where he served for 8 years before being honorably discharged. During active duty he met and married his soulmate, Joannie Rae Arnold, whom he affectionately called his "Sweet Baby". They were stationed in many cities before settling down in New York City. They were married for 62 loving years. Everyone that knew Edward will attest to how much he loved his wife. He prided himself on taking care of her. Their marriage was one that set the bar to all that were blessed to witness their love. Through this union two children were born, Sharon Renee and Edward David Mitchell. Although they biologically had two children, Edward was a father and grandfather to many. Edward worked at The Manhattan Psychiatric Center in forensics while also driving a taxi cab for 20 years. He worked with New Yorks most violent, mentally ill offenders. Edward was the go to person at the facility due to his compassion for others and extreme physical abilities. He retired in 1985. After retirement, Edward dedicated his time to his family. During this time, he earned the title "Papi". Papi loved his children and grandchildren. He played an extremely active role in all of their lives by doing everything from babysitting to household repairs. Being a father and grandfather brought him great joy and fulfillment up until his very last day of life. Mr. Mitchell was a saved Christian man that loved Jesus. He was a Deacon at New Lincoln Baptist Church in Austin, Texas and St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was honored to have this title and fulfilled his position with dedication and pride. He also sang with the Over 60 choir, and taught Sunday School and Bible Study classes in Texas. He was very active in the church until his health failed him. Edward was a caregiver and provider for anyone in need. Edward leaves to cherish his memory, his loyal and loving wife, Joannie Mitchell; daughter, Sharon Mitchell; granddaughters, Shakirah (Tim) Bradford, Latesha (Renaud) Leandre, Kaylin Mitchell; grandsons, Alex Lee and Edward Cory Mitchell; special great granddaughter, Kiarah Garnett; honorary children, Susan Carter, Denise Mizelle, Mary Patton, Kenya Stewart, Crystal Reed, Yasmine Talonto; 10 great grandchildren; and a host of other loving relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, siblings, and his son, Edward David Mitchell, whom he is blessed to now be reunited. Visitation will be held at 11:00 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday, February 16, 2019 at St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church, 2365 Compton Rd, Cincinnati, Ohio 45231 with funeral service beginning at 12:00 p.m. Interment will take place at 10:00 a.m. in the Dayton National Cemetery on Monday, February 18, 2019.
