James D. Vaughn

March 25, 1925 — August 10, 2022

Brother James D. Vaughn, 97, was born March 25, 1925 to the union of the late Gilbert and Willie Pearl Vaughn in Danville, Virginia. James died peacefully at home on Wednesday, August 10, 2022 under the watchful care of his loving daughter, Brenda. He had been watching one of his favorite cowboy movies. James didn’t talk about himself very much, but his family states that following High School he served in the U.S. Army during World War II. His sister, Catherine, introduced him to her friend from church, Lucille Jones. He covertly courted Lucille by driving the two of them to church. He was baptized in Danville at First Pentecostal Church under the ministry of Bishop Maggie Keene. James and Lucille were married on February 23, 1953 and to this union were born two sons, James Leon and Larry Darnell; and one daughter, Brenda Sue. The family moved to Cincinnati, Ohio in 1955 and he began working for the railroad a short time later. His job allowed his family to ride the train for free. He was a man of his word, and he could fix almost anything in the house as well as cars. If he gave you money, he wanted to know what it was for and he wanted his change back. James retired from Steel Craft in 1987. He loved spending time with his family, and they made frequent trips to Virginia until his health began to fail him. He loved the country cooking and sweets from back home and he especially loved his wife’s cooking. He leaves an enduring legacy of love for his daughter, Brenda; 13 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and a host of other family and friends. James was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille; sons, James Leon and Larry Darnell; parents, Gilbert and Willie Pearl Vaughn; brother, Clearance Vaughn Sr. (Loretta); and sister, Catherine Adams (Jean). Visitation will be held at 9:00 AM with service to follow at 10:00 AM on Saturday, August 20, 2022 at New Jerusalem Apostolic Temple, 4019 Gilmore Avenue, Cincinnati, Ohio 45209. Interment: Landmark Memorial Gardens. Arrangements entrusted to the caring hands of KINLEY Funeral Home & Arrangement Center.
