Jerome May

January 12, 1949 — December 19, 2022

Jerome May, 73, of Athens, Ohio formerly of Springfield, Ohio, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, December 19, 2022 at 7:10 p.m. in his residence. He was born January 12, 1949 in Salt Lake City, Utah a son of James and Gertrude (Ward) May.


He received his high school diploma and a degree as a specialist in refrigeration and air conditioning during his tour of duty in the armed forces from 1969-1973. While enlisted in the United States Air Force, Jerome was stationed in Guam and later transferred to Travis AFB in Fairfield, California where he was honorably discharged in 1973. Jerome worked as a Nurse Assistant at Franklin County, St. Ann and Mt. Carmel Hospitals from 1979-1985. Later he worked for the Columbus Board of Education from 1986-1991, Loews from 1991-2001, and the Ohio State University. After his retirement, he worked for the Department of Veterans Affairs.


Jerome was a member of Athens First United Methodist Church from 2015-2022 under the leadership of Pastor Robert McDowell. His passion and love was helping people in the community, feeding the homeless at Monday's Lunch, as it was called at Athens First United Methodist Church. He was loved by his community of friends that became his family: the AMVETS Chapter 76 Riders, Monica Silverthorene, the Gerigs, Anne Braxton, the Hanlons, Ms. Allene, and the Hadleys.


Jerome leaves to mourn his passing; five sisters and one brother: Gerald (Rose) May, and Alysia (Robert) Phelps of Springfield, Ohio; Gertrude (May) Zite, Linda (May) Bey, Josephine (May) Williams of Columbus, Ohio; and Jacquelyn (May) Brown of Phoenix, Arizona; and a host of nieces, nephews, and a special friend, Teresa Person.


Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 6, 2023 at the Dayton National Cemetery with Elder Jacquelyn May Brown officiating.
