John Wesley Long, 92, of Springfield, Ohio, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 28, 2018. He was born on February 26, 1926 in Lowndes County, Alabama, a son of Short Long and Lizzie Robinson. He worked at Harris Harbor of Troy, Ohio, Home City Iron & Metal of Dayton, Ohio and Tower Metals of Springfield, Ohio. He was a faithful and dedicated member of Mount Zion Baptist Church and an Usher Board member for over 50 years. John leaves to cherish his memory five daughters, Linda Long, Katherine Long, and Janice Long all of Springfield, Ohio, Arlene Cantrell, Kathy Bolds and Marva Stargell of Dayton, Ohio; two sons, Fred (Doris) Byrd and Gary Byrd of Columbus, Ohio; two sisters, Huzell Blake of Connecticut and Rose Campbell of Dayton, Ohio; one brother, A.C. (Lola) Robinson of Springfield, Ohio; 36 grandchildren, 112 great grandchildren, 19 great, great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. John was preceded in death by his loving wife of 62 years, Thelma Louise Long; his parents, grandmother, Hessie West; two children, Barbara Merritt and James Cecil Byrd; four grandsons, Craig Dino, Tony Cat, Stephen; and one great granddaughter; siblings, Dave Robinson, Addelle Lee, Kathryn Kennedy, Purvella Long, and Eulla Mae Long. Visitation will be held Saturday, July 7, 2018 from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service at 10:00 p.m. in Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Arrangements entrusted to the Jerry W. Kinley Funeral Home.
