Kurtis L. Mckenzie

February 16, 1968 — June 24, 2022

Kurtis McKenzie, 54, of Cincinnati, OH, passed away on Friday, June 24, 2022. He was born to Margarette Anderson and Elmer Manuel on February 16, 1968 in Cincinnati, OH. From a very young age, Kurtis displayed musical talents and charisma that would charm anyone that came into contact with him. Surrounded by music, Kurtis would often sing along with the radio while perfecting his harmonies overtime. Kurtis loved attending church service and accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior at a very young age. As a young man, Kurtis' natural musical abilities blossomed even more. He became skilled at playing the keyboard, guitar and song writing. With the ability to harmonize with anyone, a 6 octave range and clear falsetto, he decided that pursuing a career in music was the right choice for him. In partnership with his mother, they established MarKurt Productions in 1986. He became the lead singer of a R & B group, Next In Line, before deciding to go solo the following year. In 1987 he wrote, produced and recorded his first solo single, "Trust In You". Later that year he recorded "Love Scout" and "Trashcan of My Memories". Both songs were co-written with his mother and gained local success and garnered the attention of major recording labels. Unfortunately, his music career was cut short due to a debilitating seizure disorder but Kurtis never stopped smiling or singing! Kurtis loved his family dearly often recalling fond memories and asking about loved ones. He was extremely proud of his children and grandchildren and protective of all he loved! He leaves to cherish his beautiful memory: daughter, Raven Powell; son, Kurtis McKenzie, Jr.; 14 grandchildren, Rahianna Jackson, Taylor Lomax, Terrick Lomax, Jr., Royal Essences, Ray'anna Lynch, Shilah Jones, Kaydence McKenzie, Trinity Banks, Zamirah McKenzie, Sirus Wilson, Leo Smith, Alexia Smith, Alijah Williams and Darryl McKenzie; adoring sisters, Kandis McKenzie; Kandale Watts (Antonio Watts) and Kawonia Neely (Carlton Neely); aunt, Joann Richardson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Kurtis was preceded in death by his loving mother, Margarette Anderson; beloved grandmother, Marie Penn; and grandfather, Noblin Anderson. Gone but not forgotten! Sing loudly in the arms of the Lord Kurtis! Arrangements entrusted to KINLEY Funeral Home & Arrangement Center.
